PERKINSTON — The Mississippi Gulf Coast women’s basketball team dominated the All-NJCAA Region 23 Team, with Bulldogs earning four spots on the nine-player team.
Simaru Fields, Tytiana Buckley, Je’Mya Evans and Ja’Sharreah Hunt won places on the squad after leading Gulf Coast to its first region title since 1977. Gulf Coast advanced to the national tournament in Casper, Wyo.
The group led the Bulldogs to a share of the MACCC title with a 13-1 record in conference play. They finished 23-5.
Simaru Fields was named All-Region for the second time. The silky sophomore guard from Pass Christian averaged 14.3 points, the seventh-best total in the conference. Her 2.8 steals per game were 10th in the league, and she made the fifth most 3-pointers (54).
Tytiana Buckley, an all-around guard/forward from Meridian, averaged 13.5 points, which was ninth in the MACCC. She shot 35.8 percent from the 3-point line for fourth in the conference and was sixth at 7.8 rebounds per game. She shot 48.8 percent from the floor to finish ninth.
Je’Mya Evans, a powerful forward from Gulfport, averaged 12.8 points and 6.5 rebounds. She had the fifth-most field goals in the conference (159).
Ja’Sharreah Hunt, a shifty guard from Roxie, averaged 11.0 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists. She shot 39.2 percent from behind the arc, third-best in the league. Her assists ranked eighth.
The four sophomores are eligible for NJCAA All-American selection. That team will be announced later this week.
