Bulldogs move to 2-0

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast got a passing grade from coach Ryan Joiner after a 1-0 non-conference women’s soccer win over East Central at Bary Thrash Field on Wednesday.

That doesn’t mean it couldn’t have been better.

“We did some good things,” he said. “We kept the ball well, but didn’t create too many chance. I’m happy with the set piece goal we scored. Jordan (Hall) put that in yesterday. Overall, I give us a B-minus on the night, but a win’s a win. I’m happy with the shutout.”

Charlotte Gatehouse (Fr., Southampton England/Oasis Academy) scored off a free kick in the 11th minute, with the ball pinging around Warrior defenders. The play was designed by Hall, the first-year assistant coach.

“It worked really well, exactly what we practiced in training,” Gatehouse said. “The delivery was really good, and everybody was in the right place. It was really good to see it play out in a game.”

“It’s about moving pieces,” Joiner said. “We tried to move some people out of their wall, get some girls on the overlap and move them around differently. We want to catch teams sleeping. It was well-worked, a fantastic goal.”

The Bulldogs finished with 15 shots, but were unable to expand the lead. Laurel Conley (Fr., Ocean Springs/Ocean Springs) had an uneventful night to earn a one-save shutout.

Gulf Coast moved to 2-0 on the young season, defeating the Warriors in their first game of the season.

“Positives are lots of girls are getting minutes,” Joiner said. “We’re trying to learn who they are as players. We’ve got to finish some more chances. I know that’s crazy coming off a 4-0 win Friday, but any time you play in conference, it’s tough.”
