POPLARVILLE, Miss. — The No. 10 Pearl River women’s soccer team was in control at halftime Tuesday night against Mineral Area, but a weather delay resulted in a suspension of the contest with the Wildcats in front 2-0.

The Cardinals refused to remain in Poplarville following the weather delay despite the Pearl River training staff’s plan to restart the match safely.

Pearl River picked up its first goal of the night just two minutes into the contest. Haylie Alvarez (Gulfport; St. Patrick) saw a bit of space and opted to fire off a shot. A nearby Mineral Area centerback blocked her attempt, and the ball ricocheted out toward the charging Frederikke Nielsen (Randers, Denmark; Randers Statsskole), who smacked it into the back of the net.

Emily Taylor (Laurel) added PRCC’s second goal of the match in the 33rd minute — again striking on the rebound. Yazmin Humphrey (Lucedale; George County) fired a shot that the MAC goalkeeper saved. The ball shot off toward the crashing Taylor, and she quickly finished it off, 2-0.

The Wildcats were all over the Cardinals in the first half, tallying 10 shots on goal.

The teams entered the midway point with PRCC in front 2-0. Just before the second half was set to get underway, the game was delayed due to lightning in the area. The teams were permitted to return to the pitch to warm up at 8:55 and could start the second half at 9:05. Mineral Area opted to leave at that time.

The Wildcats return to the field Tuesday, September 17 for their first MACCC action. The match at Southwest will begin at 5 p.m. and will be livestreamed at Go.SMCCBears.TV.
