No. 6 Bulldogs head up north again

PERKINSTON — No. 6 Mississippi Gulf Coast moved up four spots in the new NJCAA football rankings, which came out Thursday. That will happen when you beat the No. 2 on its home turf.

That doesn’t mean the Bulldogs were satisfied with everything that happened against East Mississippi in Scooba last week.

“We were really tickled we won the game, but from a coach’s perspective, we have a lot to get better at,” Gulf Coast coach Jack Wright said. “There’s some things, quite honestly, we were lucky to get away with. I think every position can say that. We got better as the game went on, but there are some things we did early I wish we hadn’t done. We have a chance now to fix those.”

The Bulldogs hit the road again for the second game of the season, traveling to Moorhead on Thursday. Kickoff against Mississippi Delta is set for 7 p.m. at Jim Randall Stadium. The game will be streamed at https://www.youtube.com/@MDCCTrojans, with the Gulf Coast radio broadcast streaming at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch. It will be broadcast on SuperTalk 103.1 FM.

Delta ran the ball well against Jones in a 41-9 loss in their season opener at Ellisville. The Trojans ran for 183 yards, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. Trevon Brown led the attack with 64 yards, averaging nearly 5 per attempt and scoring once. Quarterback Troy Griffin ran 11 times for 49 yards.

“They’ve got a bunch of good athletes, and they’re scrappy,” Wright said. “It’ll be their first home game, so I’m sure they’ll be amped up and ready to go.”

The Bulldogs needed nearly the entire roster to beat EMCC last week, playing every defender who was dressed out. There are a lot of freshmen on both sides of the ball, and they showed improvement as the game went on.

They also didn’t shy away from tough circumstances, trailing by a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Damaryion Fillmore, a sophomore defensive back from Biloxi, stepped into the starting lineup and excelled. He had three tackles, two assists and a tackle for loss.

“He played a great game,” Wright said. “He’s a guy that has really worked his tail off at Gulf Coast. He didn’t play a ton last year, but he’s done everything we’ve asked him to do. He’s extremely talented, extremely fast. He’s physical, and he’s coming into his potential. He’s fulfilling what we foresee him being able to do.”
