TUNICA, Miss. — Monday and Tuesday were historic for Pearl River Community College as its first-ever women’s golf team hit the links for the first time.

“It was fun to watch them compete,” head coach Coby Scarborough said. “For some, it was the first tournament golf they ever played. I was proud of the way that they competed throughout the event.

“They were up against some teams that were a little farther along at this point. They know they have some things to work on and will keep improving.”

Pearl River shot plus-180 in the first round before improving on day two with a score of plus-162. The Wildcats finished behind East Mississippi and Northwest in the tournament.

The Wildcats were led by Maya Morelos (Grambling, La.; Ruston). The freshman shot 39-over in the first round but improved by 10 strokes on day two to finish 68-over for the tournament.

Gracie Allgood (Laurel; West Jones) finished second on the team with a score of 70-over. She shot plus-36 in round one and improved by two strokes in round two by shooting 34-over.

Ashlynn Goss (Picayune; Ignite Christian Academy) finished 90-over with scores of plus-46 and plus-44. Snead State transfer Courtney Brewer (Petal) tallied a round one score of 59-over and a round two score of 55-over. Elizabeth Purvis (Carriere; Pearl River Central) rounded out PRCC’s team efforts by shooting 115-over. She scored plus-59 on the first day and improved to plus-56 on day two.

Lilian Sanzin (Saucier; Harrison Central) played as an individual. She shot plus-119, including a day one score of 59-over and a day two score of 60-over.
