PERKINSTON — The three sophomores who played on Mississippi Gulf Coast’s national championship golf team picked up another award Thursday, this time for work in the classroom as well as on the course.
Will Burnham, Jackson Wise and Andrew Zielinski were three of 20 golfers who earned the Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar awards.
To be eligible, NJCAA sophomores must participate in 50 percent of their team’s competitive rounds and have a stroke average under 77. The minimum GPA is 3.2, and players must be of high moral character and in good standing at their schools.
Burnham, from Jackson, was the No. 1 ranked player in the country according to Clipped. He won one event and 11 straight top-five finishes on the way to the Bulldogs’ national championship. He graduated with a 3.84 GPA in management and will continue his collegiate golf career at Southern Miss.
Wise, from Pontotoc, won the Lou Hart Invitational and MACCC Championship. He had five top-five finishes and graduated with a 3.65 GPA in law studies. He will continue his education at Mississippi State.
Zielinski, from Ocean Springs, was the No. 2-ranked player in the country. He graduated with a 3.92 GPA in nursing, winning the Gulf Coast Invitational and posting five top-five finishes. He was named the College Sports Communicators Academic All-American of the Year and will continue his golfing career at Lee University.
Cobalt Golf produces laser rangefinders for using on the course. The GCCA is the professional organization for men’s collegiate golf coaches and oversees national ranking and awards programs for players in all divisions.
