PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast had seven teams earn NJCAA Academic Awards in 2023-24, including three in the top 10 of their respective sports.
Teams that compile GPAs of 3.0 or higher receive NJCAA Academic Team of the Year Honorable Mention recognition.
Coach Ryan Joiner‘s women’s soccer broke the 10-win plateau for the first time since 2016 in his first season in charge, and his squad finished sixth with a 3.69 GPA. That was the highest among Gulf Coast teams.
Coach Sam Blackburn’s women’s tennis team was MACCC and Region 23 runners-up on the courts and compiled a 3.61 GPA. The Bulldogs just missed a top-10 finish in GPA with a 3.61.
Coach Brad Thornton‘s golf squad won the NJCAA championship and tied for seventh in their sport with a 3.55 GPA.
Coach Chris Handy‘s men’s soccer team put together a 3.45 GPA and wound up seventh. His Bulldogs won the MACCC championship for the second time in three seasons.
Coach David Kuhn‘s softball team had a 3.44 GPA while making the playoffs. Baseball had a 3.40 GPA, and Blackburn’s men’s tennis team tied for 20th with a 3.29 GPA.
