PERKINSTON — No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast looks to extend its win streak against MACCC competition this week in the Jim Redgate Invitational.
The Bulldogs haven’t lost to conference competition since Meridian beat them in the 2022 conference championship. The Eagles are the host of this tournament, which is being played at Briarwood Country Club. The 36-hole event starts Monday.
“I’m excited to get conference play started,” Gulf Coast coach Brad Thornton said. “It will be a true test taking on Meridian at their place. They’ve gotten off to a hot start, but I think our guys have competed really well and will be ready to go.”
The Bulldogs skipped the first two MACCC events of the year to play in national tournaments, coming in third against top fields at the Folds of Honor Challenge and the NJCAA Preview. Meridian won both events, with East Central finishing as runners-up.
Gulf Coast will make one change to its five-person team, adding Garner Seymour (So., Biloxi/Biloxi) to the lineup. He had a strong performance at the NJCAA Preview and will join Stanley Campbell (So., London, England/Essex Golf College), Ludvig Behring (So., Sollentuna, Sweden/Osterakers Gymnasium), Peyton Russell (So., Gautier/Gautier) and John Mark Mills (So., Pontotoc/Mike Bender Golf Academy).
Grayson Lockhart (Fr., Starkville/Oak Hill Academy) will play as an individual.
“There is a lot of talk about keeping our conference streak alive, and as a coach I’m happy our guys take that pressure and apply it each day in practice and qualifying,” Thornton said. “It will only make us better in the long run.”
