PERKINSTON — In a matchup of two teams separated by one in the ITA Collegiate Women’s Tennis Rankings, No. 12 Mississippi Gulf Coast left no doubt which was the better team against No. 13 Wallace State.
The Bulldogs won 8-1 Saturday at the MGCCC Tennis Complex to remain unbeaten.
“They played lights out,” Gulf Coast coach Sam Blackburn said. “I was really impressed with our No. 1 doubles team. They played a really good team from Wallace, and the match was up and down. It was a great win for them, and a good confidence booster.”
The Bulldogs swept the doubles matches to set the tone for the day. An important point came at No. 3 doubles, where Mikenzy Dubrow (Fr., Biloxi/Biloxi) and Lauren Sullivan (Fr., Laurel/Laurel Christian) won 8-2.
Dubrow was particularly impressive.
“Sometimes a doubles player, if they’re only playing doubles, they don’t get as much attention,” Blackburn said. “She was moving at the net really well, playing aggressive. Her energy was great, and it really helped our momentum.”
Gulf Coast (5-0, 4-0 MACCC) picks up even momentum ahead of a big match against No. 11 Jones. First serves Tuesday in Ellisville will be at 2 p.m.
