PERKINSTON — No. 12 Mississippi Gulf Coast wrapped up the No. 2 seed in the NJCAA Region 23 Women’s Tennis Tournament on Tuesday with a 5-0 win over No. 21 Northwest Mississippi.
The Bulldogs will finish the MACCC season as conference runners-up after the rain-shortened win at the MGCCC Tennis Complex.
“It feels good to lock in a high seed,” Gulf Coast coach Sam Blackburn said. “We’d love to be No. 1, but we’ll take 2. It’s going to be a good tournament. We’re glad to finish our home matches strong, and even though we didn’t get to finish (all courts today), they showed out and did what they needed to do.”
The Bulldogs dropped only three games in sweeping the three doubles courts. Danique Vermue and Niyah Strickland won the only two singles courts to finish before the rain hit.
It was the last matches at Perk for three Bulldogs. Sophomore Day ceremonies celebrated Strickland, Kendall Burn and Angela Moreno before play began.
“I’m proud of all the sophomores and how they finished their home career,” Blackburn said. “All three of those girls have made big positive differences on this team in many different ways, whether it’s leadership or playing-wise, their togetherness. You name it, they did it. We’re going to miss them, and it’s been great to have them here for a couple years.”
