PERKINSTON — No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast shut out Southwest Mississippi 4-0 Friday night at Bary Thrash Field, maximizing the credit it will get in the MACCC standings.
“I thought we played well in the first half,” Gulf Coast coach Chris Handy said. “We were able to get the goals we needed early to take some of the pressure off. I’m happy everybody got to play.”
The Bulldogs (6-1-1, 2-0 MACCC South) scored three goals before the break to take command. Bryon Shepard (So., Gulfport/St. Patrick), who had been subbed in just moments before in a wholesale swap of Bulldogs, cleaned up a loose ball off a corner kick just outside the 6-yard box. Victor Moerck (So., Vaerlose, Denmark/Lyngby Handelsgymnasium) got the assist in the 15th minute.
Dorian Robinson (Fr., Biloxi/Biloxi) sprung Mills Sheridan (So., Flowood/Northwest Rankin) five minutes later to double the lead.
Kade Smith (So., London, England/Whitmore) made it 3-0 five minutes before halftime by drawing a penalty and converting.
The final goal was a reversal of the first, with Shepard setting up Moerck.
David Ruiz Ospina (So., Manizales, Colombia/Gimnasio del Pacifico) stopped five shots for his second shutout.
Gulf Coast picked up three points in the standings and reached the maximum goal differential with the four-goal win.
“Full points, full goal differential,” Handy said. “That’s the best you can do. That’s all we can ask for.”
Gulf Coast plays its first conference road match Tuesday with a trip to Wesson. Kickoff against Copiah-Lincoln is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
