No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast got a late equalizer from Mills Sheridan and finished with a 2-2 tie at Copiah-Lincoln on Tuesday night.
Sheridan’s goal in the 85th minute kept the Bulldogs unbeaten in conference play.
“I’m proud they were able to fight for it,” Gulf Coast coach Chris Handy said. “They’re still in control of whether they win conference or not, so we’re still in good shape. Without that goal, we’d probably be needing some help.”
The Wolves shocked Gulf Coast with a third-minute goal, but the lead didn’t stand for long.
The Bulldogs took full advantage of the narrow field at Stone Stadium to erase their first deficit. Mark Wilson (So., Ridgeland/St. Andrews) delivered a long throw deep into the box which was nodded on by Victor Moerck (So., Vaerlose, Denmark/Lyngby Handelsgymnasium). Kade Smith (So., London, England/Whitmore) banged it home for his second goal of the year.
Co-Lin (4-1-1, 1-1-1 MACCC) took the lead back in the 66th minute after a mistake at the back.
Gulf Coast (6-1-2, 2-0-1) kept applying pressure and finally got the breakthrough late. Nygel Jobe (So., Brandon/Brandon) found Sheridan (So., Flowood/Northwest Rankin) near the top of the D, and his slick turn and quick shot found the lower left corner.
The Bulldogs will entertain Northwest Mississippi on Friday. The earlier-than-usual kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
