The Picayune boys bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 45-35 win over visiting St. Martin Tuesday night.
The Marron Tide moved to 2-1 on the young campaign with the lone loss coming to Hattiesburg last week. Against SMHS, Dakeith Quinn paced Picayune with 14 points and Freshman Kelton Stewart chipped in 11 points. For the Yellow Jackets, who actually led by five points in the third quarter, Jax Walker scored nine points and RJ Ratliff added eight points
while Kai Vieira pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds in the losing effort.
The Yellow Jackets are now 0-4 overall, and were coming off a close 43-40 home loss to B.C. Rain of Mobile on Saturday in action at the annual Joe Barlow/Mike Perkins Invitational Tournament. The Yellow Jackets got a double-double from sophomore Elias Duncan who tallied 11 points and pulled down 16 rebounds in his first varsity start in that game.
The St. Martin girls won their third straight game Tuesday night with an impressive 71-32 win over the Lady Tide.
La’dymein Lafayette led St. Martin with an impressive 24-point, 14-rebound performance and Kaleah Lowery added 22 points, seven assists, seven steals and eight rebounds. Kylenn Ward also added nine points as SMHS saw a dozen players score in the win.
Kennedy recently released the pairings for the “Girls Hoopsfest: Us vs. Them Classic”. St.Martin will host the one day event that will feature nine games featuring 18 teams from four different states.
Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Louisiana will all be represented in the affair.
On Saturday, Dec. 2nd, games will start at 9:30 a.m., and the last game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. “Southern Six” squads competing in the event are Long Beach, D’Iberville, Pascagoula, Moss Point and the host St. Martin team. Other Mississippi teams involved are Oak Grove, Meridian, Neshoba Central and Madison Central.
Teams from other states on the schedule are Alma Bryant, Foley, Davidson, Gulf Shores, McGill-Toolen, Blount and Theodore from Alabama as well as White Castle from Louisiana and West Florida Tech from Florida.
Before that event, however, the Lady Yellow Jackets will close out the month of November by heading to South Alabama and competing in the Robertsdale, Ala., Thanksgiving Tournament beginning Friday when St. Martin meets McGill-Toolen on Mobile at 6:30. The three-day event will continue on both Saturday and Monday in a true eight-team tourney format. The Moss Point girls are also in the tourney, but on the other side of the bracket from SMHS.
St. Martin will also face off with an as-of-now unbeaten Hancock Lady Hawks squad as well on Tuesday, Nov. 28th.
