In a nail-biting contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Picayune Maroon Tide defeated the Pascagoula Panthers 38-28 on Friday night in Picayune.
The game was marked by explosive offensive plays and dramatic turns, showcasing the intensity of this longstanding rivalry.
The first half saw both teams trading blows, with Pascagoula scoring on its first three possessions. A standout moment came when quarterback Silas Corder connected with Christian Campbell for a stunning 60-yard touchdown pass. The Panthers built a 21-14 lead by halftime, capitalizing on their offensive momentum.
Picayune, however, came out strong in the second half. On the first play after halftime, running back Darrell Smith sprinted 52 yards for a touchdown, tying the game at 21-21. This set the stage for a series of pivotal plays as the Maroon Tide gained momentum.
After a defensive stand that forced a Pascagoula three-and-out for the first time in the game, Picayune took over at the Panthers’ 36-yard line. Just seven plays later, quarterback Brandon Parker found Brodrick Ducre for a 7-yard touchdown, pushing Picayune ahead 28-21.
The Tide turned again when Pascagoula’s Tylan Wilson fumbled a punt return, allowing Picayune to recover as the third quarter came to a close. Edgar Cruz kicked a 28-yard field goal to extend Picayune’s lead to 31-21.
Pascagoula responded with a determined drive, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Amarie Jackson, narrowing the gap to 31-28. But the Maroon Tide quickly countered with another explosive run from Darrell Smith, who dashed approximately 40 yards for a touchdown, bringing the score to 38-28.
Picayune defensive coordinator Seth Hayden reflected on the team’s second-half performance.
“It’s a huge boost of confidence,” he said. “Pascagoula has a great offense, but we made the necessary adjustments and just went back to basics.”
The Maroon Tide’s victory marks the continuation of their strong performance at home, extending Pascagoula’s winless streak in Picayune to 13 games.
With both teams displaying playoff-caliber talent, fans can expect a potential rematch later in the season, especially with strong contenders still in the mix.
As the season progresses, both teams will look to build on their strengths, with Picayune aiming to maintain its momentum and Pascagoula seeking to bounce back from a tough defeat.
