The second round of the state playoffs begins Tuesday night, and 13 teams in the “Southern Six” remain alive in the chase for a state championship in their respective classifications.
In Class 1A, defending state champion Resurrection advanced under some unusual circumstances Friday in Pascagoula. The Eagles hosted West Tallahatchie in the first round and were due to play a doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
However, after RCS ripped off 19 runs in the bottom of the first frame, the WTHS head coach pulled his team off the field after their at bat in the top of the second and forefitted not only that game but the second game as well. The official scores are 19-0 and 7-0.
Nicholas Watts drove in a game-high four runs for the Eagles in the lone inning that RCS batted.
Resurrection hosts Sebastapol to open the second round Tuesday night.
In Class 3A, St. Stanislaus swept McLaurin in two games winning 10-0 in Bay St. Louis on Tuesday and 14-3 on the road Friday to close out the series and move on. The Rocks will travel to Enterprise Clarke to begin second round play Tuesday night.
Also in Class 3A, St. Patrick saw its season come to a close after losing to St. Andrews Episcopal 12-2 Monday night on the road in Ridgeland.

The teams split the first two games of the series with SPHS winning on the road 9-2 on Tuesday before falling at home 7-2 on Friday resulting in the third and deciding game.
In Class 4A, Region 8-4A is perfect so far in the Class 4A South State playoffs as all four teams in that league swept their respective opening rounds series last week with Stone, Pass Christian Bay High and Greene County all advancing to the second round.
The Tomcats host Mendenhall Tuesday night to open second round action. Pass Christian travels to Newton County to open second round action Tuesday night. Greene County heads to perennial state power Sumrall for second round action Tuesday night. The Bay High Tigers head to Purvis to begin second round play Tuesday night.

Both Ocean Springs and D’Iberville are still alive in the Class 6A South State playoffs.

In Class 5A, East Central sees its first action in the playoffs hosting Florence Tuesday night as does Picayune who gets a visit from Wayne County. Also, Vancleave travels to South Jones and Pearl River Central heads to West Jones.
And in Class 6A, Biloxi and D’Iberville each get started in the postseason as the Indians host defending state champion Northwest Ranking and the Warriors get a visit from perennial state power Petal. In other action, Gulfport travels to Warren Central and Ocean Springs hits the road to Brandon.
