The West Harrison Harrison High School football team is coming off its most successful season in its 15-year history as a program.
And now, as the Missississippi High School Activities Association expands to seven classifications for the first time in its long and storied history, the Hurricanes hope to continue that momentum and earn the first football playoff berth in school history also.
West Harrison enters its sixth season under head coach Quincy Patrick, and is coming off that record-setting 6-4 mark, the first winning season in school history on the gridiron. The Hurricanes just missed out on qualifying for the Class 5A South State playoffs, finishing in fifth place in Region 4-6A one game behind Vancleave.
For their success at WHSS last year, Patrick was named the National Football Foundation 2022 Coach of the Year on the Mississippi Gulf Coast as the Hurricanes finished undefeated at their home field 4-0 for the first time ever.
“First of all I want to give God the glory and want to thank all the coaches who voted on this award,” Patrick said at the time. “It shines a light on the great administration, great student-athletes, and assistant coaches at West Harrison. Thanks to the players from 2018-21 who laid the foundation we are trying to build on.”
This season, the Hurricanes move up a level to Class 6A and move into Region 4-6A along with three other foes from the former Region 4-5A as well in two-time defending state champion Picayune, George County and Long Beach. That quartet joins two holdovers from the previous line-up in Region 4-6A in Hancock and Pascagoula to comprise the revamped region.
The sixth season of the “Quincy Patrick Era” at West Harrison kicks off on Friday, Aug., 25th as the Hurricanes host Greene County.
