Jorja Roberson‘s gargantuan Game 1 set the stage for a high-scoring Mississippi Gulf Coast sweep of Holmes in Goodman on Thursday.
The sophomore outfielder from Branyan clouted three home runs and drove in seven in a 16-7 win. The Bulldogs won the second game 8-5.
Roberson had a three-run homer in the second, a solo shot in the fourth and a three-run homer off the scoreboard in the seventh.
Aleah Beaugez (Fr., D’Iberville/D’Iberville) had two doubles and two RBI. Natalie Shaw (So., Olive Branch/Marshall Academy) had two hits, including a double. CC Lynn (So., Waynesboro/Wayne County) and Irina Sanford (Fr., Lucedale/George County) had two hits, with Sanford driving in two.
Kylie Burnette (So., Picayune/Picayune) pitched five innings of relief, allowing one earned run, for her first win of the season.
The Bulldogs scored five runs in the first inning of the second game, capped by a two-run single by Savannah Wilbanks (Fr., Southaven/DeSoto Central).
Olivia Keith (So., Crestview, Fla./Crestview) had a two-run pinch-hit triple in the third to push the lead out to 7-3.
Wilbanks and Shaw had two hits each. Beaugez and AB Parrish (Fr., Corinth/Alcorn Central) doubled. Kylee Necaise (So., Gulfport/West Harrison) allowed one earned run in seven innings for the win.
Gulf Coast (25-12, 7-3 MACCC) will host Jones at Ross-Smith Field on Tuesday. First pitch in Perk is set for 4 p.m.
