The coaching carousel has been spinning like crazy in the Southern Six since the high school baseball season ended just a few weeks ago.
Vancleave’s Justin Edwards was named the new coach at Gulfport High after leading the Bulldogs to the 2024 Class 5A state championship. Edwards, a former assistant with the Admirals, replaces Jamie McMahon, who stepped down after 13 seasons.
McMahon posted a 241-142 record with the Admirals and led Gulfport to South State titles in 2017 and 2023.
Edwards had been at the helm of Vancleave since 2018, posting a 121-49 record. The Gulfport native was an assistant under McMahon from 2012 until 2018.
Resurrection Catholic School in Pascagoula also has a new baseball coach, hiring a person familiar with the program.
Ryan Jordan, a former RCS coach, returns to the Eagles. Jordan was the coach in 2007 and was an assistant in 2008 and 2013. He replaces Aron Frederic, who stepped down after leading the Eagles to the Class 1A South State finals this season.
Jordan knows he’s inheriting a heralded program that has captured state championships in two of the last three seasons.
“Undoubtedly, I’m most excited about working to get our boys back in position to win a third state title in four years and continue a tradition of winning on and off the field,” Jordan said in an RCS press release on Friday.
Pearl River Central has hired Buddy Turnage as its new baseball coach. According to sources, Turnage will be officially named coach of the Blue Devils on Monday.
Turnage has spent the last three seasons as the coach at Pearl River (La.) High School, guiding the Rebels to a playoff run this season that ended in the semifinal round.
On the gridiron, Moss Point is looking for a new football coach after John Feaster left to become the coach and athletic director at Pearl River Central.
Feaster, a former Blue Devils assistant, spent just one season at Moss Point after seven seasons as Stone High’s coach.
Feaster replaces Jacob Webb, who resigned at PRC after just one season to return to Alabama and coach at Morgan Academy in Selma.
On the hardwood, D’Iberville hired Eric Vianney as its new boys basketball coach on Friday. Vianney spent the last six seasons at Picayune and led the Maroon Tide to three region championships and playoff berths in all six seasons.
A former Maroon Tide standout, Vianney guided Picayune to back-to-back final four appearances in the state tournament and the Tide were state runners-up in 2023.
