A successful coach in the prep football circles in Alabama is coming to South Mississippi with hopes of continuing that trend at St. Patrick.
The administration at St. Patrick High recently announced the hiring of Oscar Glasscock to the position of head football coach. He is set to led the Fighting Irish forward beginning in less than two months.
Glasscock comes to the “Southern Six” from Cullman (Ala.) High School, where he went 28-17 and led his team to the playoffs in each of his four seasons. The Bearcats were 7-4 in 2022, losing 41-24 to Gadsden City in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs.
“We appreciate everything coach Glasscock has done for Cullman football and Cullman High School,” Cullman City Schools Superintendent Kyle Kallhoff said in a press release. “In the time I’ve worked with him, I’ve been impressed with the relationships he has with his players, but more importantly his focus on character building with student athletes. On behalf of the Board of Education, we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”
In his first season with Cullman, Glasscock led the program to its first and only 6A playoff win. Glasscock took over the program in 2019 after spending time as a head coach and an assistant coach with other programs in the state.
In his four years at Cullman, the team had a 16-8 mark in region play and also outscored opponents 1,089-803 during his time at the helm. Throughout his career, Glasscock has coached over 20Division I signees, including a pair of former NFL players, and two former CFL players.
“I am excited to welcome Coach Glasscock to the Mississippi Gulf Coast,” incoming SPHS Principal Paul Knapstein said at the time of the hire. “Coach Glasscock has been extremely successful, both as a defensive coordinator and as a head coach. His vision of what a football program is aligns with our vision. Coach also lives his Catholic faith and will be instrumental in helping form intentional disciples. The energy, passion, expertise, and excitement Coach Glasscock will bring is the perfect mix of talents to pick up where Coach Bailey left off.”
Glasscock is a 985 graduate of Cullman High. In his second season at CHS in 2020,the Bearcats produced an 8-2 regular-season record that allowed the squad to host a first-round playoff contest for the first time since 2013.
Glasscock’s final season saw the Bearcats also finish 7-4, though their four losses came against teams who combined to go 39-11.
Trey Bailey, interim SPHS principal at the time of the hire, states, “I echo Mr. Knapstein’s sentiments. Coach Glasscock will be a wonderful addition to our school community, and I look forward to watching him develop our football program further. His attributes are top notch, and he is a seamless fit for St. Patrick Catholic High School.”
