PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast quarterback Landon Varnes‘ application for NJCAA Offensive Player of the Week could have ended after “five total touchdowns.”
There was more to his resume after making his college debut by beating No. 2 East Mississippi in Scooba last week, and that just made him a shoo-in. The NJCAA announced Wednesday he’d picked up the award, a day after Varnes earned MACCC Player of the Week plaudits.
Varnes, who played at Brandon High, completed 21-of-32 passes for 233 yards in the win at Scooba. He completed touchdown passes to four different receivers and picked up his fifth total touchdown by plunging in from 1 yard for the winning score.
The Bulldogs trailed by a touchdown midway through the final quarter before Varnes engineered a pair of touchdowns.
