West Harrison traveled to George County on Monday night and picked up two wins over the Rebels at Sellers Gymnasium in Lucedale.
The Lady Hurricanes improved to 17-1 overall and 3-0 in Region 4-6A with an easy 69-33 win while the boys used a big first quarter and held off a late Rebels rally for a 65-57 win. The Hurricanes improved to 8-8 and 3-0.
The West Harrison girls jumped out to a 22-5 lead over the Lady Rebels after the first quarter and never looked back.
Sydnei Barber had a monster first half, scoring all of her game-high 26 points as the Lady Canes led 54-14 at the half.
The second half was played with a running clock.
Miranda Parker added 10 points for the Lady Canes while Tikyazha Barron contributed off the bench. Jalynn Applewhite added 6 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Canes will play Hancock and Pascagoula in early January as those three teams have positioned themselves at the top of the region standings.
Senior DeKari McNair led the Lady Rebels (5-7, 0-3) with 15 points while Delanie McNair added 8.
George County hosted Gautier on Tuesday night before closing out its pre-Christmas schedule in the Greene County Tournament this weekend.
George County will battle Picayune and Long Beach for the fourth seed in the region. The Lady Rebels will return to region play at Picayune on Jan 7.
The boys contest started in a similar fashion to the girls game as West Harrison used a 17-2 run to close out the first quarter for a 22-6 lead.
George County spent the remainder of the game playing catch-up, and despite outscoring the Canes 51-43 the rest of the way, the Rebels came up short and fell to 6-6 and 0-3.
West Harrison’s Jazeer Carter scored 12 of his team-high 25 points in the first quarter and finished the game with a double-double, adding 12 rebounds. Carter was 13-of-14 in free throws and the Canes made 24-of-35.
Owen Reese joined Carter in double figures with 13 while Jamarcus McCaleb added 6 points and 12 assists.
George County’s rally was led by LB Bradley and Jeremiah Bolton as the two combined to score 49 of the team’s 57 points.
Bradley had a game-high 26, including 4 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as George County got within 55-51 with 3:30 to go in the contest.
West Harrison made 13 free throws in the final quarter and George County could get no closer.
Bolton scored 15 of his 23 points in the first half and added 8 rebounds.
