The quest for a third straight state championship came to an end Tuesday night for Resurrection Catholic as the Eagles were thwarted by Taylorsville in the Class 1A South State championship series.

The Tartars (25-5) scored six runs in the first two innings of the decisive Game Three on the way to an 8-0 home win over the Eagles (24-6), who had captured three consecutive South State championships.

The Tartars won the series opener 2-1 on Friday at Taylorsville and the Eagles came back with an 8-0 victory on Saturday in Pascagoula to force the deciding game.

This was the fourth elimination game of the postseason for the Eagles, but they couldn’t get the bats going and were shut out.

RCS managed just three hits and committed three errors.

A wild pitch allowed the Tartars to score their first run and then a bases-loaded walk made it 2-0.

Easton Ford had a two-run single in a four-run second inning to give Taylorsville a 6-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, Brady Quinn had an RBI double and Ty Blakeney had a sacrifice fly RBI to make it 8-0.

Terry Barnes and Quinn both had a pair of hits to lead Taylorsville’s seven-hit attack. Ford and Blakeney both drove in a pair of runs for the Tartars. Barnes pitched six strong innings, allowing just three hits and striking out four to earn the win.

Carter McCammon, Hayden Porter, and Luke Schnoor each had a hit for the Eagles. Schnoor took the loss.

It’s been a historic run for Resurrection Catholic over the last four seasons.

RCS was denied a Class 1A state title by Tupelo Christian in 2021 but dominated Biggersville to win the championship in 2022. The Eagles repeated as champions last season with a sweep of West Union.
