POPLARVILLE, Miss. — After stellar showings for their respective teams last week, Pearl River men’s soccer’s Zach Howard (Ocean Springs) and volleyball’s Morgan Mears (Hurley; East Central) have been named the first Wildcats of the Week of the 2024-25 athletic year.
ZACH HOWARD
Howard made the most of his collegiate debut last week against Gulf Coast, picking up a brace against the Bulldogs. He scored his first goal in the 53rd minute by knocking home a pass from Emil Corfitzen (Copenhagen, Denmark).
The freshman added a second goal in the 73rd minute. He found an inch of space and fired a laser from over 20 yards out that sailed into the top left corner of the goal to equalize against MGCCC, helping the Wildcats draw against the No. 11 Bulldogs.
MORGAN MEARS
Mears had a solid opening week for the Wildcats. Across a pair of matches, the 6-foot middle blocker tallied 14 kills, 8 blocks and four digs.
Mears’ efforts helped Pearl River finish with a 1-1 record on the week.
