Beaugez’s bomb sets stage for sweep

PERKINSTON — A sweep was just what Mississippi Gulf Coast needed Saturday.

Aleah Beaugez‘s two-out grand slam in the seventh beat Itawamba 8-7 in the first game, and the Bulldogs poured it on in the second, winning 11-0 in five innings.

“We’re very fortunate,” Gulf Coast coach David Kuhn said. “We played really good Wednesday at Co-Lin and lost two heartbreakers. Today, we battled back, stayed in the game and found a way in Game 1. We had some good team at-bats, and Aleah had the big hit at the end.”

Gulf Coast (20-12) got back to .500 in the MACCC after the first three doubleheaders.

The Bulldogs trailed 6-2 after three in the opener, but Savannah Wilbanks (Fr., Southaven/DeSoto Central) smacked a two-run homer in the fourth to cut into the lead.

The seventh-inning rally started with Natalie Shaw a one-out single (So., Olive Branch/Marshall Academy). AB Parrish (Fr., Corinth/Alcorn Central) got hit by a pitch with two outs, followed by a walk by Olivia Keith (So., Crestview, Fla./Crestview).

Beaugez came to the plate and got a second chance after popping up a 2-1 pitch.

“The inning should have been over,” Kuhn said. “She popped a ball in foul territory that seemed to find a hole. She made them pay. I told her to make them pay for that because I thought they should have caught it, and she barreled it up.”

It was her second home run of the year.

Gulf Coast took advantage of eight walks and two hit batsmen in the second game, scoring their passel of runs on just five hits. Wilbanks had a three-run triple, and Shaw and AB Parrish (Fr., Corinth/Alcorn Central) had two RBI each.

Olivia Falcon (Fr., St. Amant, La./St. Amant) threw a four-hit shutout.

ICC falls to 9-16, 2-4 MACCC.

Gulf Coast is scheduled to play Lake County at noon Sunday, but Mother Nature may have other plans. Check with Gulf Coast’s social media and the athletic website at http://mgcccbulldogs.com for updates on the schedule.
