Bulldogs close our non-conference play with split

Mississippi Gulf Coast split its final two games Wednesday before MACCC baseball play begins this weekend. In an MACCC tripleheader at Wesson, the Bulldogs beat homestanding Copiah-Lincoln 7-6 before falling 10-7 to Northwest Mississippi.

Gulf Coast went 14-6 in its non-conference schedule. The Bulldogs host Mississippi Delta on Saturday. First pitch in the doubleheader at Ken “Curly” Farris Field is set for noon.

Seth Sterling (Fr., Vicksburg/Warren Central) had a two-out, two-run double in the sixth for the winning runs in the opener.

Charlie Keller (So., Mobile, Ala./Mobile Christian), who had hit a solo homer in the first, singled in a run in the fifth to make it 5-3. Jacob Palazzo (Fr., Gulfport/Gulfport) doubled in another run, and another scored on a subsequent error.

Dom Jackson (Fr., Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze) had three hits, and Keller and Brandon Cain (So., Mobile, Ala./Baker) had two each. Marc Stephens (So., Orange Beach, Ala./Gulf Shores) also had an RBI.

Tyler Gunter (So., D’Iberville/D’Iberville) picked up the win with 3.2 innings of one-run middle relief. Brayden Scott (Fr., Pascagoula/Pascagoula) picked up a save.

Gulf Coast outhit Northwest 10-9 in the second game but committed three errors and walked seven Rangers. All 19 hits in the game were singles.

Stephens had three hits and two more RBI. Kannon Varnado (So., Gulfport/Harrison Central) had two hits. Jayden Mark (So., Petal/Petal) drove in two runs.
