Mississippi Gulf Coast lost a pair of heartbreakers in the rivalry MACCC tripleheader Wednesday. The Bulldogs took No. 3 Pearl River to 11 innings before losing 6-5 gave up a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the seventh to lose by the same score to Jones.
Charlie Keller (So., Mobile, Ala./Mobile Christian) hit a three-run blast in the fifth inning to give the Bulldogs (11-5) a 5-3 lead over homestanding PRCC. The Wildcats got a two-run home in the sixth to tie it, and the game scheduled for seven innings spilled way over.
Adrian Byrd (So., Wiggins/Stone) pitched 6.2 innings of masterful relief to get the Bulldogs to the 10th inning. He scattered four hits, striking out three and walking one, giving up two runs.
Pearl River (15-5) scored on a squeeze play in the 11th to win it.
Marc Stephens (So., Orange Beach, Ala./Gulf Shores) had three hits, and Keilon Parnell (Fr., Pascagoula/Pascagoula) had two.
In the second game, Gulf Coast scored three times in the sixth to trim its deficit to 5-4. Keondre Fields (Fr., Nesbit/Magnolia Heights) hard-hit grounder forced an error to score two, and Landon Holliman (Fr., Hattiesburg/Sumrall) bunted home another.
Parnell doubled in the tying run in the seventh, but Jones (17-5) was able to end it with one out in the bottom of the inning.
