PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast flashed the leather Monday afternoon on the way to a Ross-Smith Field sweep of visiting Lansing.
Olivia Falcon (Fr., St. Amant, La./St. Amant) threw a four-hitter for a 2-0 shutout, and the Bulldogs’ bats came alive in an 8-4 win in the second game.
“I felt like we played great defense all day long,” Gulf Coast coach David Kuhn said. “We’re putting the ball in play a lot more. The defense we played today might have been the best two defensive games I’ve seen since I’ve been here. The plays that were made and the execution, we just played really good team softball.”
The Bulldogs (17-9) ran its wins streak to seven games. The squad received votes in the new NJCAA Division II Softball Poll released Monday. Lansing is now 1-5.
Jorja Roberson (So., Branyan/East Union) singled in the first run in the third, part of a three-hit game for the right fielder. Savannah Wilbanks (Fr., Southaven/DeSoto Central) delivered a ground ball to score the second run in the sixth for an insurance run Falcon didn’t need.
She struck out three without a walk, finishing on just 66 pitches.
Aleah Beaugez (Fr., D’Iberville/D’Iberville) had two hits, including a double.
In the second game, Jett Harrell (So., Clarksdale/Lee Academy) smacked a first-inning home run, and Kamryn LaFosse (So., Lake Charles, La./Sam Houston) had an RBI single. LaFosse delivered a two-run double in the third for a 4-3 lead.
Parrish drove in a run in the sixth, as did Natalie Shaw (So., Olive Branch/Marshall Academy) on a double. Parrish had three hits.
Harrell went the distance for the win in the circle.
Gulf Coast begins MACCC play Thursday with a trip to play Mississippi Delta. The noon doubleheader is being played at Delta State in Cleveland because of expected poor field conditions at Clarksdale.
