PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast overcame a sluggish start to beat Lake County 13-8 in five innings at Ross-Smith Field on Monday.

The Bulldogs trailed 4-0 before starting to rally with a three-run second. Shaylynn Hoak (Fr., Vancleave/Vancleave) had a two-run double, and Jorja Roberson (So., Branyan/East Union) drove in another with a groundout.

They got 10 runs in the third after two outs. Hoak’s ground ball was booted, allowing a run to score, and Irina Sanford (Fr., Lucedale/George County) drew a bases-loaded walk to tie it at 5.

Roberson singled in two runs, and Jett Harrell (So., Clarksdale/Lee Academy) followed with an RBI single. The Bulldogs scored five more times on a series of walks, errors and wild pitches.

Kylee Necaise (So., Gulfport/West Harrison) went the distance for Gulf Coast, striking out five and allowing just one earned run.

Gulf Coast (21-12) took advantage of seven walks, two hit batters and five wild pitches. Lake County is now 4-7.

The Bulldogs are back in MACCC action Tuesday when Southwest Mississippi visits Perk. First pitch at Ross-Smith Field will be at 2 p.m.
