Brandon Cain combined with Cade Mattison for a no-hitter and drove in three runs while going 5-for-5 to kickstart a Mississippi Gulf Coast sweep of Nunez on Monday.

The Bulldogs (7-0) won the opener 7-0, and closed out the doubleheader with a 6-2 victory in Chalmette, La.

Cain (So., Mobile, Ala./Baker) had a pair of doubles at the plate while striking out three in 4.2 innings. Mattison (So., Hattiesburg/Lamar Christian) struck out two in 2.1 innings.

It was the Bulldogs’ fifth no-hitter since 2016, with the last one being thrown by Dawson Flowers in 2021.  Dylan Mills-Derouen had the 2016 no-no, with Kole Kittrell picking one up in 2018. In 2020, Antoine Harris, Matthew DeLano and Evan Keith combined for a no-hitter.

Dom Jackson (Fr., Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze) homered for the fifth straight game. Marc Stephens (So., Orange Beach, Ala./Gulf Shores), Seth Sterling (Fr., Vicksburg/Warren Central) and Charlie Olsen (So., Gulfport/Gulfport) also drove in runs. Sterling had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs, who pounded out 12 in the seven-inning contest.

In the nightcap, Landon Holliman (Fr., Hattiesburg/Sumrall) doubled in two runs in the fourth to tie the game at 2. Stephens broke the tie with a triple, and Jackson’s sacrifice fly made it 4-2 in the eighth.

Holliman picked up another RBI with a sacrifice bunt in the ninth, and Sterling singled in the final run.

Blake King (So., Petal/Petal) struck out six in a four-inning start, with Brayden Scott (Fr., Pascagoula/Pascagoula) and Adrian Byrd (So., Wiggins/Stone) throwing five one-hit innings of scoreless relief. They struck out six.

The Bulldogs are back at Ken “Curly” Farris Field on Friday when Coastal Alabama-South visits. First pitch for the doubleheader at Perk will be at 2 p.m. Buy your tickets ahead of time to save money. It costs $7 for adults or $5 for youth online, or $10 and $7 at the gate. Tickets are available at http://mgcccbulldogs.com/tickets, and the game will be streamed at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch.
