Two-time Class 1A state baseball champion Resurrection showcased its dominance in its home opener Friday, overpowering Gautier 26-3 in five innings in Pascagoula.
The Eagles scored 16 runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by Hayden Porter’s grand slam, and they surged to a 24-0 lead in the second.
Their final two runs were in the third after Gautier avoided a shutout on Sebastian Gonzalez’s RBI double and Enrique Flores’ RBI single in the top of the inning. The game was called in the fifth inning because of the mercy rule.
Carter McCammon led the Eagles on the mound with six strikeouts over four innings.
Porter also contributed an RBI single and an RBI double.
Resurrection’s Justin San Miguel had four hits.
Gonzalez and Flores showed resilience for Gautier, with Gonzalez hitting two RBI doubles and Flores tallying two singles and an RBI.
Resurrection aims to carry its momentum into the next three home games, which are against Oak Grove, Stone High, and St. Stanislaus.
Gautier seeks to regroup on Tuesday against Picayune.
