The visiting Hornets overcame an early seven-point deficit with 18 points in the second half to pull out the win at A.L. May Stadium in Perkinston on the campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in the Battle of Highway 26 Friday night.
The win earned Poplarville a measure of revenge over Stone after the Tomcats eliminated them from the Class 4A playoffs with a win in the South State semifinals last year. In addition, Stone’s new head coach Jacob Aycock spent the past few years as the offensive coordinator at PHS.
Sydney Blackmon hit Lane Amacker on a 35-yard touchdown toss with 6:48 to play that broke a 14-14 deadlock and gave Poplarville the lead for good.
Nick Miller, who scored the Hornets’ first touchdown of the night on a 71-yard scoring scamper off a reverse, then picked off Tomcat quarterback Connor Tice a few minutes later resulting in a 34-yard field goal by Kyler Boothe to seal the win.
Stone tailback Keena Gallaway bolted 31 yards for a touchdown in the first frame to put the Tomcats up 7-0. The only other Stone scored came in the third quarter when Tice hit Ayvon Stringfield with a touchdown pass.
The win evens Poplarville’s mark at 1-1 on the season, and the Hornets head to Newton County this wee while Stone stands 0-2 and is off Friday.
