Picayune saw its state-wide best 27-game win streak come to an end Friday night.

Visting Catholic High of Baton Rouge slipped past the Maroon Tide 36-35 in overtime, as the Bears barely converted a two-point conversion try on the final play of the game.

It was Picayune’s first loss in 714 days, since Sept. 17th, 2021. It was the first home loss for the Maroon Tide at Lee-Triplett Stadium since Nov. 13th 202, some 1,022 days.

Dandy Dozen tailback Chris Davis was once again a workhorse for Picayue, as he ran for 263 yards and four touchdowns and also added a two-point conversion run. Davis scored from two yards out twice, from four yards out and from five yards.

The Maroon Tide travels to D’Iberville Friday night. The Warriors were the last team to beat Picayune before Catholic snapped the streak.

LEAKESVILLE — Gage Reeves in relief of injured starting quarterback Brenn Moody scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to lead the Rebels to a 41-28 win over the Wildcats in the Battle for the Bell. Reeves’ TD runs of 18 and 20 yards were the difference in the back-and-forth affair. He finished with 67 yards on 6 carries all in the second half half. Branden Gautier stepped in at running for an injured Jacobe Street and rushed for 112 yards on 20 carries.

Moody and Street had big first halves before suffering leg injuries. Moody had a 6-yard touchdown in the final seconds of the 1st half giving the Rebels a 21-14 lead at the break. Street ended the night with 80 yards on 14 carries and 2 TDs. Defensively, George County created 6 turnovers including 2 interceptions by Marlin Odom. The Rebels rushed for over 300 yards for the second consecutive week as they improved to 2-0 on the season and will travel to Biloxi Friday.

The Greyhounds jumped out to leads of 21-0 after one quarter and added yet another three touchdowns in the second stanza and went on to a commanding 49-6 win over the visitors from just outside of Baton Roger Friday night.

Ocean Springs quarterback William Berglind tossed for two touchdowns and ran for another in the win. His scoring strikes went for 47 yards to Isiah Sinclair and for 54 yards to Bryshen Smith, and his touchdown run covered nine yards. Bryshen Smith also accounted for three scores in the win, as he also scored twice on the ground from eight yards out as well as a 30-yard scoring scamper. Will Smith also had a 15-yard touchdown run for OSHS.

The Greyhounds, now 1-1, head to Northwest Rankin Friday.

Poplarville 24, Stone 14

The visiting Hornets overcame an early seven-point deficit with 18 points in the second half to pull out the win at A.L. May Stadium in Perkinston on the campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in the Battle of Highway 26 Friday night.

The win earned Poplarville a measure of revenge over Stone after the Tomcats eliminated them from the Class 4A playoffs with a win in the South State semifinals last year. In addition, Stone’s new head coach Jacob Aycock spent the past few years as the offensive coordinator at PHS.

Sydney Blackmon hit Lane Amacker on a 35-yard touchdown toss with 6:48 to play that broke a 14-14 deadlock and gave Poplarville the lead for good.

Nick Miller, who scored the Hornets’ first touchdown of the night on a 71-yard scoring scamper off a reverse, then picked off Tomcat quarterback Connor Tice a few minutes later resulting in a 34-yard field goal by Kyler Boothe to seal the win.

Stone tailback Keena Gallaway bolted 31 yards for a touchdown in the first frame to put the Tomcats up 7-0. The only other Stone scored came in the third quarter when Tice hit Ayvon Stringfield with a touchdown pass.

The win evens Poplarville’s mark at 1-1 on the season, and the Hornets head to Newton County this wee while Stone stands 0-2 and is off Friday.
