In Class 1A, Resurrection, one of the smallest high schools in the Mississippi High School Activities Association, returns to the championship round for the third consecutive season. The Lady Eagles, under the guidance of head coach Keith Tucker and assistant coach Scott Sisson, won the title over Hickory Flat two years ago but then fell to that same HFHS squad last year in a close match.
But this season, RCS finds itself facing a new opponent for the crown in Ingomar, which knocked off Hickory Flat 3 games to 1 Monday night.
Resurrection, meanwhile, won its third straight Class 1A South State championship by sweeping visiting Noxapater 25-19, 25-8, 25-11 and moving to 21-7 overall on the season.
Sophie Sisson paved the way for RCS, as she recorded 11 kills and 8 service aces. Ella Roth contributed 7 kills and Eliza Boland added three aces, while Haley Callahan chipped in a game-high 19 assists. Taylor Griffin and McKinley Sims had a pair of blocks apiece, and Amelia Kate Frederic registered five digs.
Sisson, Callahan and Caroline Nelson comprise the trio of Seniors on this RCS squad that have been to three straight state championships. Frederic, just a junior, joins Sisson and Callahan as the only three year starters.
In Class 4A, Pass Christian swept Purvis in straight sets, 25-10, 25-11, 25-19. The Lady Pirates sit at 18-13 on the season entering the state championship.
