No. 1 Bulldogs win 8th straight

Eight straight is super great for No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast. The Bulldogs coasted to yet another victory Tuesday, winning the Tiger Invitational by 23 strokes in Corinth.

The Bulldogs carded a second straight 1-over 289 to beat East Central. Host Northeast Mississippi finished at 32-over at Shiloh Ridge Golf Club.

“We got off to a pretty good start,” Gulf Coast coach Brad Thornton said. “We could have finished a little bit better. Every day we talk about our goal is to be the best team we can be. We let a couple shots slip, but at the end of the day, leaving a trip up to Northeast with a substantial win like we had is nothing to be down about.”

Will Burnham (So., Jackson/Jackson Prep) shot 2-under 70 to finish two shots behind medalist Jamie Stace from East Central. He fired a 66 to finish at 3-under.

Gulf Coast had all seven golfers in the top 12. Jackson Wise (So., Pontotoc/North Pontotoc) tied for third after shooting 1-under to join Burnham on the All-Tournament Team.

Andrew Zielinski (So., Ocean Springs/Ocean Springs) finished 1-over in sixth, and Peyton Russell (Fr., Gautier/Gautier) was another shot back in seventh. Kyle Davidson (So., Kyalami, South Africa/St. Peter’s College) tied for eighth at 3-over.

Stanley Campbell (Fr., London, England/Essex Golf College) and John Mark Mills (Fr., Pontotoc/Mike Bender Golf Academy) tied for 12th.

“Tip your cap to Jamie Stace,” Thornton said. “He posted a heckuva round today. Sometimes it’s just not good enough, but we’re super excited about the individual performances we had. Will is itching to get another win, so hopefully he can do that next week.”

Thornton is giving his golfers off Wednesday and Thursday for spring break. They’ll be back for three days of preparation before heading to Meridian for the Lou Hart Invitational, which starts Monday. It’s the final MACCC event of the season and the Bulldogs’ final regular-season tournament.
