No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast is a shot back of No. 9 Central Alabama after the first round of the Lioneer Invitational in Gulf Shores, Ala.

The Bulldogs shot 2-over 286 and are five shots ahead of Wallace State and Eastern Florida State. All three of the other schools are NJCAA Division I. Gulf Coast plays in Division II.

Will Burnham (So., Jackson/Jackson Prep) led the Bulldogs with a 1-under 70 at the Gulf Shores Golf Club. He’s tied for third, two shots behind Central Alabama’s Gunnar Green. Eastern Florida’s Bryan Hernandez is at 2-under, and Burnham is tied with Lurleen B. Wallace’s Chaden Lucas, Enterprise State’s Nick Cook and Andrew’s Linus Landhal.

Gulf Coast’s Jackson Wise (So., Pontotoc/North Pontotoc) and John Mark Mills (Fr., Pontotoc/Mike Bender Golf Academy) are tied for seventh with three other golfers at even-par.

The tournament concludes Tuesday with 18 holes in Gulf Shores.
