POPLARVILLE, Miss. — The No. 9 Pearl River men’s soccer team continued its hot streak Friday night against Holmes, picking up its eighth win in a row. On their annual Cayce Seal night, the Wildcats defeated the Bulldogs 6-1.

“We had a lot of chances in the first half but they were really sound defensively,” head coach Drew Gallant said. “They are really organized and that’s been something we’ve ran into a lot lately. It was good to score some goals and have a little bit of fun tonight.”

Pearl River (9-2-1 overall; 5-0 MACCC) took the lead against Holmes (1-5-1; 0-5) 12 minutes into the night. Emil Corfitzen (Copenhagen, Denmark) pushed the ball up the pitch and sent a cross inside to Tycho van Haaren (Doetinchem, Netherlands). He made a quick decision to backheel the ball to the crashing Tiago Honorio Jr. (São Paulo, Brazil) for a tap-in goal, 1-0.

Holmes evened the match up in the 53rd minute after earning their first corner of the night. The Bulldogs delivered a ball to the far post that got headed home, 1-1.

The match wasn’t tied for long as van Haaren sent a ball flying from deep into the box for Honorio Jr. The 6-foot-4 striker sprinted inside and headed the ball into the back of the net in the 53rd minute, 2-1.

Three minutes later, Patton Francis (Poplarville) picked up the first goal of his Wildcat career. Sebastian Kristensen (Randers, Denmark) floated a ball into the box, and the centerback was there to head it into the back of the net, 3-1.

The van Haaren and Honorio Jr. connection took place once more in the match in the 68th minute as Honorio Jr. fired home another pass from the winger to pick up his hat trick, 4-1.

Bryton Dupuy (Bay St. Louis; Bay) joined in on the scoring fun in the 80th minute, picking up PRCC’s fifth goal of the night with a header, 5-1.

Emil Corfitzen (Copenhagen) finally got on the scoresheet one minute later. The freshman fired a number of shots on goal all game line before finally smacking home a ball that rebounded around the box, 6-1.
