Despite an interruption from Hurricane Francine last week, the high school volleyball regular season is quickly coming to a close.
Playoff spots are all but wrapped up in most classifications in the Southern Six, but a few spots are left to be claimed. Ocean Springs is the only team to claim a region title so far but Hancock, Vancleave, Poplarville, OLA and Resurrection are oh-so-close to claiming championships.
Region 4-7A, where the Gulfport Lady Admirals are the runner-up behind the Lady Greyhounds, has the most left to be determined.
D’Iberville (4-4 in region), Harrison Central (3-5) and Biloxi (3-5) are fighting for the third and fourth spots.
The Red Rebelettes are coming off a big five-set win over the Lady Warriors this week and will host Biloxi on Thursday in a match with huge playoff implications.
D’Iberville travels to Ocean Springs with the Lady Greyhounds trying to stay perfect in region play while the Lady Admirals (6-2) take on St. Martin.
Hancock continues to head toward back-to-back Region 4-6A titles as the Lady Hawks (5-0) swept Picayune (1-5) on Tuesday night.
George County (5-1) stayed in second place with a sweep of Long Beach (3-3) and will travel to Picayune on Thursday.
Hancock will host George County on Sept. 24.
Long Beach continues to battle West Harrison (3-3) for the third and fourth seeds. The two teams met at West Harrison on Wednesday night.
Hancock played Pascagoula on Wednesday night.
In Region 3-6A, Pearl River Central sits in the thick of the playoff hunt as the Lady Blue Devils (4-3) battle Hattiesburg and Terry for seeding behind region leader West Jones.
In Region 4-5A, East Central is set to host rival Vancleave on Sept. 24.
The Lady Bulldogs (7-0) remain perfect in region play with a sweep of Stone (1-6) on Tuesday night.
East Central (6-1) travels to Stone, coming off a four-set victory over Gautier (4-3). The Lady Gators will look to lock down the third seed in the region when they travel to Wayne County (3-4) on Sept. 24.
Poplarville remains unblemished in Division 8-4A as the Lady Hornets (6-0) are coming off a tough five-set victory over Pass Christian (2-4).
The Lady Hornets travelled to Bay High (4-1) on Wednesday night with a chance to clinch the region title.
The Lady Pirates host Moss Point on Thursday night and are battling Greene County (2-4) for the third and fourth seeds behind Poplarville and Bay High. Pass Christian meets Greene County on Sept. 24.
OLA hosted St. Patrick on Wednesday night as the Crescents looked to win the Region 8-3A title again. The Lady Irish (5-2) find themselves in a battle with West Marion (4-3) for the runner-up spot behind the Crescents.
In Region 8-1A, Resurrection continues to set the pace as the Lady Eagles (7-0) can clinch a title with a win over Lumberton on Thursday night.
