BROOKHAVEN, Miss. — The Pearl River golf team started strong at the Copiah-Lincoln Invitational, but some round-two mishaps kept it from gaining ground, finishing seventh. The Wildcats were 23-over after day one and shot 35-over on the second day to finish 58-over.
“It was the same thing as the first tournament. We played well on the first day, then shot 12 shots worse on the second day,” head coach Coby Scarborough said. “They’re putting the time and effort in. We have to put two days in a row together. Our scores aren’t indicative of how good these guys are.”
Nathan Hickman (Picayune) led the pack for the Wildcats for a second straight week. He shot 2-over on round one and followed it up with 4-over in round two. Hickman finished 11th overall in the tournament.
“Nate was as solid as it gets again,” Scarborough said. “He played well on both days with a 72 and a 74.”
Bo Ashley (Purvis) was PRCC’s second-best finisher. He shot 10-over in round one and improved by five strokes in the second round to shoot 5-over. For the event, he was 15-over and finished in 32nd place.
“Bo Ashley finished well the second day with a 75,” Scarborough said. “He actually had six birdies in the first round but had some doubles and triples to escalate his score.”
Jeremiah Cochran (Gautier; Covenant Christian) tied for 43rd place. He finished the opening round with a score of 6-over but hit a rough patch on the second day, shooting 14-over. He finished with a two-day score of 20-over for 43rd place.
William Dickerson (Gautier) also tied for 43rd place at 20-over. Similarly to Cochran, Dickerson had a great day with 5-over and shot 15-over in round two.
Henry Ros (Pascagoula) was consistent over both days. He shot 11-over in round one and 12-over in round two to finish in 49th place.
Preston Leggett (Laurel; West Jones) competed as an individual again this week. He shot 9-over in round one and 16-over in round two to finish 53rd overall.
NEXT UP
The Wildcats return to action Monday and Tuesday for the Jim Redgate Invitational hosted by Meridian. The tournament will take place at Briarwood Country Club.
“We’re headed to Briarwood next week,” Scarborough said. “It’s a similar course to the one we just played. I expect them to have more experience with two tournaments under their belt.”
