TUNICA, Miss. — The Pearl River men’s golf team had mixed results in its first tournament of the year. The Wildcats sat in sixth place after the opening round but fell to ninth in the second round.
“All six of our competitors played really well in the first round based on the rainy conditions of the day,” head coach Coby Scarborough said. “We were sitting in sixth place and a couple of shots out of fourth. We shot ourselves in the foot on day two and struggled on the front nine. We decided to take the back nine as if it was a brand new tournament and shot a little bit better.
“The guys know what they need to fix, and they’ll keep working to get better. I think we will continue to get better and better each tournament.”
Nathan Hickman (Picayune) was Pearl River’s standout in the tournament, finishing in 12th place overall. The freshman finished 1-over in the first round but dropped to 8-over in the second round.
“He was shooting 3-under through the first 13 holes,” Scarborough said. “He ended up shooting 1-over for the day, and I was proud of that. I think he put too much pressure on himself on the second day. His putting was what let him down.”
Jeremiah Cochran (Gautier; Covenant Christian Academy) was steady across the two days. He shot 10-over on the first day and followed it up with 13-over on day two, finishing 23-over and in 44th place.
William Dickerson (Gautier) was 13-over in the opening round and made some improvements on day two to shoot 10-over. He was in 53rd place overall with a two-round total of 24-over.
Bo Ashley (Purvis) excelled on the course in the opening round, shooting 5-over and sitting in 12th for the tournament. Unfortunately, the second round was a bit rougher for the freshman as he shot 20-over. He ended the tournament in 53rd place and 25-over.
Henry Ros (Pascagoula) rounded out the team efforts for PRCC. He shot 14-over and followed it up with a score of 12-over, ending the tournament in 56th place and 26-over.
Preston Leggett (Laurel; West Jones) competed as an individual in the tournament. He showed out in the first round with a plus-7 score but dropped to a plus-17 in the second round to finish in 49th place overall.
