The Resurrection Catholic School (RCS) football team has experienced a challenging start to the 2024 season, but the Eagles remain focused on the road ahead as pivotal region games approach.
Coming off a successful 2023 season with a 7-2 regular-season record and a deep playoff run to the third round, the Eagles are determined to finish strong in 2024 despite early setbacks.
Last season, the Eagles finished second in Region 8-1A with a 4-1 region record, just behind Sacred Heart. After defeating French Camp Academy and West Tallahatchie in the first two rounds of the playoffs, Resurrection fell to Velma Jackson 40-13 in the third round. With that momentum, expectations were high for 2024.
The Eagles’ 2024 season has been a roller coaster with a young squad led by 13-year-old, eighth-grade quarterback Cortez King. Resurrection struggled early, starting the year with three consecutive losses:
- Week 1: 34-3 loss at Bay High
- Week 2: 36-13 loss at home against Presbyterian Christian
- Week 3: 19-7 loss at Richton
But the Eagles found their footing in Week 4, securing their first victory of the season with a 40-19 win over Mount Olive, followed by a thrilling 14-13 victory at St. Patrick in Week 5. A 16-6 win at home over Salem in Week 6 gave Resurrection a much-needed boost.
In Week 7, the Eagles faced a tough challenge against Enterprise, falling 41-22. Despite the loss, coach Eric Denmark saw positives.
“(Enterprise) is a very good football team… we didn’t give up,” he said.
Looking ahead, Denmark said, “We’re just going to take it one game at a time, we’re just going to pick right back up and get after it.”
The Eagles are 3-4, but with three crucial region games remaining on the schedule, they still have a chance to make an impact in the region.
Resurrection will travel to East Marion on Oct. 18, face off against Sacred Heart at home on Oct. 25 and close out the regular season at Lumberton on Oct. 31. These matchups will determine whether the Eagles can make another push toward the playoffs.
As RCS gears up for the final stretch of the season, Denmark and the Eagles remain committed to fighting through adversity, building momentum for a strong finish and continuing to develop their young signal caller.
