The NJCAA rankings in softball are littered with MACCC teams, and Mississippi Gulf Coast almost got a pair of wins at No. 12 East Central on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs settled for a split in Decatur, knocking off the Warriors 6-5 in the nightcap after taking a two-run lead into the sixth of the first game before falling 4-3.

Jorja Roberson (So., Branyan/East Union) had three of the Bulldogs’ five hits.

She doubled in two runs in the second, and Aleah Beaugez (Fr., D’Iberville/D’Iberville) drove her in with a single. Savannah Wilbanks (Fr., Southaven/DeSoto Central) doubled in two runs before the inning was over.

East Central pulled within 5-3 in the sixth, but Wilbanks hit a ground ball that forced an error which allowed an important insurance run to score.

The Warriors scored twice in the seventh, but Olivia Falcon (Fr., St. Amant, La./St. Amant) closed out the game for a save. Kylie Burnette (So., Picayune/Picayune) threw 5.2 innings to pick up the win. She struck out four and allowed five hits.

In the first game, Natalie Shaw (So., Olive Branch/Marshall Academy) drove in two runs. She had a first-inning sacrifice fly and an RBI single in the fifth.

Irina Sanford (Fr., Lucedale/George County) had an RBI double in the second.

East Central scored twice in the sixth to tie it and won it in the seventh.

Gulf Coast will celebrate Sophomore Day on Saturday when Coahoma visits. Ceremonies will take place immediately following Game 1. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. Buy your tickets ahead of time to save money. It costs $7 for adults or $5 for youth online, or $10 and $7 at the gate. Tickets are available at http://mgcccbulldogs.com/tickets, and the game will be streamed at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch.
