PERKINSTON — Landon Varnes and Charlotte Gatehouse have been named Bulldogs of the Week for Aug. 26-Sept. 1.

Varnes, a freshman quarterback from Brandon, made his first collegiate start a memorable one by leading No. 10 Mississippi Gulf Coast to a 38-24 win at No. 2 East Mississippi. He threw four touchdown passes and ran for another, completing 21 of 32 passes for 233 yards. The Bulldogs trailed by a touchdown in the fourth quarter before Varnes threw for one score and ran for the other.

Gatehouse, a freshman from Southampton, England, scored Gulf Coast’s goal in a 1-0 win over East Central at Perk.

Also nominated:

Laurel Conley, a freshman from Ocean Springs, stopped one shot to record a shutout in a 1-0 win over East Central. She’s played in two college games and recorded two shutouts.

Taurean Davis, a freshman linebacker from DeSoto Central, had 10 total tackles to help beat East Mississippi.

Brandon Hines, a sophomore from New Orleans, had a pair of kickoff returns to 53 yards against East Mississippi.

David Ruiz Ospina, a sophomore from Manizales, Colombia, claimed a top-10 win over Heartland in a 2-1 victory at Senatobia. He made two saves to beat the No. 9-ranked team in a neutral-site game.

Jasintho Wielders, a freshman from Krimpen aan den Ijssel, Netherlands, had the game-winning goal in No. 11 Mississippi Gulf Coast’s 2-1 win over No. 9 Heartland in Senatobia.
