PERKINSTON — Landon Varnes had a college debut to remember, leading Mississippi Gulf Coast to a win at No. 2 East Mississippi.
The freshman quarterback picked up an award to go with the victory, being named MACCC Offensive Player of the Week. He earned the award Tuesday after voting by the conference’s sports information directors.
Varnes, who played at Brandon High, completed 21-of-32 passes for 233 yards in the win at Scooba. He completed touchdowns passes to four different receivers and picked up his fifth total touchdown by plunging in from 1 yard for the winning score.
The Bulldogs trailed by a touchdown midway through the final quarter before Varnes engineered a pair of touchdowns.
Varnes is now eligible for NJCAA weekly honors, which will be announced Wednesday.
