After dodging Francine earlier in the week, the West Harrison Hurricanes (2-1) stormed the East Marion Eagles (0-3) for a 48-12 win in their home opener in Gulfport on Friday.
The Hurricanes gained 406 yards and shut out the Eagles in the first three quarters.
“Our defensive line stepped up big tonight,” said West Harrison coach Quincy Patrick.
West Harrison running backs Jordan Stapleton and Trey Harrison combined for 304 yards rushing on 25 attempts, six touchdowns and a two-point conversion. Jeremy Jones ran for 23 yards and a touchdown.
Hurricanes quarterback Demario Davies completed only one pass, but it was to Depatrick Byrd for 50 yards.
“Praying for everyone on the Mississippi Gulf Coast,” said Patrick. “We told our guys last Sunday this would be a strange week and to stay focused. We pray everyone came out of Hurricane Francine safe and sound.”
The Hurricanes will host Bay High on Sept. 20. They won the 2023 game 42-7.
Patrick is the winningest coach in the history of West Harrison, which opened in 2009. His record is 20-45.
