JOPLIN, Mo. — Andrew Zielinski got to celebrate a big event while his top-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast team battles in the NJCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship. He signed with NCAA Division II Lee University to continue his collegiate golf career.
“It’s a very good college,” he said. “They were very good to me when I went up there. They treated me like family. I got the whole shebang with the head coach and the assistant coach. They were very welcoming. Who doesn’t want to go to a top-10 D-II college?”
Zielinski, a sophomore from Ocean Springs, won the Bulldog Invitational, one of his five top-five finishes. He’s one of the leaders on a team that’s won 11 straight tournaments headed into these NJCAAs, and he picked up a PING All-American First Team plaque at the pre-tournament banquet. His 72.57 stroke average is the ninth-best in school history.
Like Gulf Coast, Lee is playing in the national championship right now. The Flames won the NCAA Division II title in 2022. Lee, which is located in Cleveland, Tenn., and plays in the Gulf South Conference, is coached by Evan Spence.
“Drew’s been an outstanding young man to coach and be around these past two years,” Gulf Coast coach Brad Thornton said. “He continues to work hard, and he’s earned every bi tof this opportunity to move on to Lee. He’s going to have an opportunity to help a program’s that’s been a powerhouse in Division II. The experience he brings to that team is going to be awesome.”
