Mississippi Gulf Coast jumped out to a big early lead against Hinds and maintained its hold on first in the MACCC women’s basketball standings by winning 84-38 in Utica.

Ja’Sharreah Hunt (So., Roxie/Franklin County) had a happy homecoming and led the Bulldogs with 20 points.

“Hunt was big for us tonight,” Gulf Coast coach Hope Adams said. “She was in her neck of the woods and was able to give them a show.”

Gulf Coast led 22-5 after the first quarter, then went on to score the first seven points of the second quarter.

The Bulldogs (16-4, 9-1 MACCC) remain a half-game in front of Pearl River and hold the tiebreaker over the Wildcats. Southwest Mississippi suffered its second conference setback in a row to fall into third.

“I felt like we played well tonight,” Adams said. “We got better productivity out of our bench. We put emphasis on running floor and the players executed the game plan and was able to secure a big win, super proud of our team.”

Tytiana Buckley (So., Meridian/Meridian) was the only other Bulldogs in double digits with 13, but Simaru Fields (So., Pass Christian/Gulfport) and Je’Mya Evans (So., Gulfport/Harrison Central) had nine each.

Aniyah Hunter (Fr., Louisville/Louisville) came off the bench with eight, and Myan Barthelemy (Fr., Loranger, La./Loranger) had seven as a sub.

Gulf Coast has a quick turnaround before it hosts fourth-place Itawamba on Thursday. Tipoff at Dantzler Arena is set for 5:30 p.m.
