The bout lived up to its billing.

The Swamp was buzzing as the Gautier Gators edged out the Pascagoula Panthers 38-31 in a thrilling edition of the Singing River Classic on Friday night in Gautier.

With both teams fueled by their fierce cross-river rivalry, it was Gautier that emerged victorious, navigating the treacherous waters of The Swamp to secure a hard-fought win.

The game delivered all the intensity and drama fans have come to expect from this storied matchup, making for a classic that will be talked about for years to come.

The Panthers defense forced a quick three-and-out to start the game, but quarterback Silas Corder and the Pascagoula offense struggled to gain momentum. This led the Panthers to attempt a field goal for the initial points.

However, Gautier’s Gabriel Millender had other plans. As the kick was blocked, Millender scooped up the ball and sprinted 56 yards for a touchdown.

His electrifying return not only thwarted Pascagoula’s drive but also put the Gators on the board with a 7-0 lead, igniting the stadium and shifting the momentum firmly in Gautier’s favor.

The Gators added to their lead with a 22-yard field goal by Eric Robinson to make the score 10-0 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Pascagoula’s offense found its rhythm as Corder linked up with D’lass Nunnery for a 41-yard touchdown pass.

The strike trimmed Gautier’s lead to 10-7, breathing new life into the Panthers until Gators quarterback Trey Irving scored on a 10-yard run to give Gautier a 17-7 lead going into halftime.

The third quarter saw both quarterbacks putting on a show as they exchanged scoring blows.

Corder connected with Darrius Carter for a 14-yard touchdown pass, narrowing Gautier’s lead.

But the Gators quickly answered back as Irving powered through for a 4-yard touchdown run and a 24-14 Gautier lead.

Pascagoula continued to fight back in a dramatic final quarter. Amarie Jackson’s 16-yard scoring run tightened the gap to 24-21 before the Gators quickly retaliated with a 72-yard touchdown run by Kasin Thomas, extending their lead to 31-21.

Not to be outdone, the Panthers mounted a furious comeback, scoring 10 unanswered points to tie the game for the first time since the game-opening kickoff.

Jackson’s 11-yard touchdown run and Mason Kramer’s 30-yard field goal, which came with 2:45 left, brought the score to a 31-31 tie.

In a fitting climax, Gautier once again moved the ball down the field to set up the game-winning 4-yard touchdown run by Latrell Pogue with 38 seconds left.

In a standout performance, Irving led the Gautier charge with 23 completions on 34 attempts for 200 yards and added 102 rushing yards on 12 carries, including two touchdowns.

Thomas was also a powerhouse on the ground, rushing for 122 yards on 13 carries and finding the end zone once.

Pogue had three carries for 22 yards, including the winning score, and Sebastian Gonzalez was a reliable target, hauling in eight catches for 112 yards.

Pascagoula will host D’Iberville next week and Gautier will travel to Moss Point.
