POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River Community College will make history Monday and Tuesday as its first-ever women’s golf team will hit the links for the first time. The Wildcats will be just one of three community colleges in Mississippi to field a women’s golf team, joining East Mississippi and Northwest.

“It’s very exciting to be one of the pioneers of women’s golf in the state of Mississippi,” head coach Coby Scarborough said. “This year will be interesting because we aren’t sure what to expect. We put together tryouts and found six great golfers who wanted to be part of PRCC’s first women’s team. I want these ladies to go out, play hard and try to have a solid showing.”

Pearl River will hit the links for the first time on Monday for the MACCC preview at Tunica National, and the excitement within the program is incredibly high.

“These girls are excited, and they are really like a family,” Scarborough said. “They are supportive of each other and help each other get better. They are also a little unknowing and aren’t sure what to expect, but they believe in themselves. I’m excited to see them get out there.”

Scarborough expects Maya Morelos (Grambling, La.; Ruston) to be one of the team’s leaders.

“I am excited for Maya. I think she will be a leader on this team,” he said. “We’ve been working on her short game, and it has improved. She’s played a lot of golf in her life, and I think she can be our catalyst this year.”

Another player who can provide leadership on the inaugural team is Courtney Brewer (Petal). Unlike the other members of the team, Brewer has college experience after playing last season at Snead State.

“She’s a transfer, so she has some experience,” Scarborough said. “I’m so happy to have her. Not only for her golf abilities but also for her ability to educate me more on the women’s side of things. I think she will be one of the captains and help these girls along. She can let them know what to expect.”

Gracie Allgood (Laurel; West Jones) was a two-sport athlete in high school.

“Gracie used to play softball, so she can absolutely pound the ball,” Scarborough said. “She’s our longest driver on the team. If we can get her short game going, she can take a great leap.”

Elizabeth Purvis (Carriere; Pearl River Central) was an accomplished high school golfer. With the Blue Devils, Purvis won the 6A Individual State Championship and helped her team capture the championship.

“Elizabeth played golf in high school but didn’t keep playing since we didn’t have a team,” Scarborough said. “She has been putting in the time and effort. If she goes out and plays like I know she can, she should be a good player.”

Ashlynn Goss (Picayune; Ignite Christian Academy) is new to the game, but Scarborough expects her determination to carry her.

“Ashlynn really put the effort in over the summer,” Scarborough said. “She was on the course every Friday, getting better. She’s dedicated, determined and plays with some grit.”

Lilian Sanzin (Saucier; Harrison Central) is one of PRCC’s newest golfers, picking up the game within the last few years. Scarborough is excited about her addition to the team.

“Lilian has been here and putting the time in,” Scarborough said. “She started playing golf because it was fun. She’s enjoying it and putting in the work to get better.”
