PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast’s softball season ended here Wednesday afternoon in an NJCAA Region 23 Play-in game.
Northwest Mississippi beat the Bulldogs 6-1 at Ross-Smith Field to advance to the Ellisville Regional.
Gulf Coast (34-22) managed just three hits against the Rangers.
“We didn’t have many opportunities to score, and the few we did we didn’t take advantage of,” Bulldogs coach David Kuhn said. “They just came through with two big two-out hits, and you have to tip your cap to their pitcher for keeping us off balance.”
Jorja Roberson (So., Branyan/East Union) led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run to right, matching a first-inning home run by the Rangers (27-18).
The Bulldogs stranded a runner at third in the third inning and one at the second in the next inning, but they didn’t get anybody to second the rest of the game.
“We overcame a lot of injuries this year,” Kuhn said. “We had some people who had to play out of position, but they kept battling, kept fighting. They never gave up. It’s just tough to swallow because we had such a tough April.”
