PERKINSTON — No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast rebounded from dropping its first points in MACCC play by pounding Northwest 7-0 on Friday night at Bary Thrash Field.
Victor Moerck (So., Vaerlose, Denmark/Lyngby Handelsgymnasium) had a first-half hat trick, and Vincenzo Jeanfreau (Fr., Saucier/Pass Christian) had two goals and an assist.
“Seeing them play with urgency was the most important thing,” Gulf Coast coach Chris Handy said. “We warmed up a little bit harder. We’re really good when we’re desperate, and we want to start the game off like that.”
The Bulldogs tied at Copiah-Lincoln on Tuesday but improved to 7-1-2 overall, 3-0-1 in MACCC play. They scored three times in the first 20 minutes to all but put the game away.
Moerck and Jeanfreau accounted for all the first-half scoring. Nygel Jobe (So., Brandon/Brandon), Ibrahim Konare (Fr., Le Havre, France/Institute of the Sacred Heart Mons) and Jeanfreau scored in the second.
“Victor’s a goal-scorer,” Handy said. “He works really hard to put himself in good positions, and it’s good to see him rack up some goals.”
Connor Goodman (So., Ocean Springs/Ocean Springs) and Alexander Mink (Fr., Long Beach/Long Beach) finished with two assists each.
David Ruiz Ospina (So., Manizales, Colombia/Gimnasio del Pacifico) registered his third shutout on a light night of work. Keeping the clean sheet was an important goal.
“It’s a complete game, no lapses,” Handy said. “We’ve put ourselves in trouble in the past with a small lapse in judgment. To complete the game with no mistakes is big.”
The MACCC has an open date on Tuesday, so the Bulldogs will be back in action next Friday with a trip to Itawamba. Kickoff in Fulton is scheduled for 3 p.m.
